When Maccabi Selly Oak in Birmingham learned of the current atrocities happening in Israel, both men’s and women’s teams felt compelled to try and make a small difference from afar.
A collection bank was created, in order to source food and sanitary products for those who are currently struggling in Israel. Over 100 pieces were collected, and have been distributed to GIFT, who will be sorting through the products before sending them to Israel.
An idea which originally was born on the group chat’s of both teams turned into a hugely positive and special experience for both teams, illustrating how Jewish student sport on campus has allowed teams to use their Jewish identity for the better.
Tilly Lipfriend, a committee member who joined Maccabi Selly Oak women’s back in its infancy said:
‘When Sam (manager and founder of Maccabi Selly Oak women’s) said he was starting a food bank collection, the whole team were thrilled to be able to contribute knowing that the items delivered to Israel will make a difference for those in need during this time. Despite being in England, it made us feel that we were able to offer support to everyone affected.’
Zev Grunwald, manager and coordinator of the Maccabi Selly Oak men’s team added:
‘With the situation going on in Israel it’s easy to feel helpless. Getting everyone to donate a couple of items for the foodbank was a simple but impactful way we could do our bit to help!
