Another week and another disappointing result for Hapoel this season, as the team fell to their fourth straight defeat yesterday morning against the business school, a loss which must hurt even more considering the fact Hapoel were already defeated by the same team in the first game of the season. Despite its failure last week, Jasper van Veen continued to press on with his formation change, switching from last term's 3-5-2 to a different 4-3-3 system, whilst also still missing crucial players.

Making his return to the squad after his own injury, Hapoel goalkeeper Benjamin Mallandaine was forced into action early on in the game having to make a crucial save to stop the team from giving away an early lead. Unfortunately, shortly after his save, club captain Sam Clarfield’s own goal left Hapoel behind after just 10 minutes into the game. An early lack of midfield control was another crucial error from the team, as LUBS took advantage of Hapoel’s disorganisation and very quickly doubled their lead, with the team going two goals down for the second consecutive week. In a familiar series of events, a counter-attack led by van Veen gave Hapoel a goal back going into the break, with another goal scored by Joel Walters. Despite winning a penalty shortly after Walters’s goal, Daniel Bowman’s spot kick was saved, and Hapoel conceded another set-piece goal just before half-time.

Although there were changes made for the second half, Hapoel did not manage to pull off a comeback like they have done so many times this season, never presenting a significant threat to their opponents. A header from Walters was sent wide early on into the second half but after giving away another free kick, LUBS made it four and killed any chance of a potential revival. With four losses in their last four games, Hapoel need to turn this poor run of form around fast, or van Veen could face a similar fate to Maccabi Selly Oak’s Sam Ucko, who has stepped down as manager of the men’s team in Birmingham.
