After a disappointing end to last term's campaign and a set of retrials, Hapoel manager Jasper van Veen believes that his side were capable of winning the league this time around. However, a sudden change in formation and the emergence of an injury crisis threw an early spanner in the Dutchman’s plans following another loss yesterday to History society, the very same team that defeated Hapoel at the end of last term knocking them out of the cup.

It took nearly 10 minutes for Hapoel to get out of their own half, and an early handball given away meant that emergency substitute goalkeeper Noah Rosenthal was forced into making the first of several heroics during yesterday’s game. Despite his efforts keeping Hapoel in the game during the first half, a free kick given away meant that the team found themselves conceding with 20 minutes to go. One player even commented that “it is literally negative football” with the fullbacks too far back, as it felt that the team’s signature attacking style of play was missing in the early stages of the game. An incredible equaliser by new signing Zack Cohen helped bring the team back into the game, scoring on his return to the team after spending months out with a shoulder injury levelled the game at the break.

Despite the equaliser getting Hapoel back into the action, the second half got off to a poor start, and History very quickly regained the lead and then shortly followed it up with a third goal following a goalkeeping error. Facing a bleak situation, van Veen’s decision to bring himself into the game appeared to be a tactical masterstroke, scoring his first chance immediately after coming off the touchline, before then helping to assist the second equaliser of the game, a brilliant finish from Oli Simble. Just when it looked like Hapoel had snatched a vital point from an embarrassing defeat, the team gave away and conceded another goal from a free kick, although there was some debate as to whether History’s final goal was offside. With three losses in their last three games, hopefully the team can get back on course, especially with another charity match against Nottingham JSOC in March.
