Hailing from Nottingham University and representing the Great Britain national team, Oliver Strange’s career has soared since his stumble into the sport at the age of seven. What began as two friends on the search to improve their fitness would unveil his natural talent in the unique sport of fencing. From the first strike of foil, Oli knew he had something special with the sport, little did he know this would lead him on a path of success, triumphs and major sporting achievements.

Nottingham University, a vibrant city with a notable Jewish community provided the perfect backdrop for Oli to continue his road of greatness. With supportive peers and mentors, he became not only the University captain but also a major achievement of being the Bucs captain for fencing. His first real experience of competing on a major national level, however, was when he competed in Budapest. This gave him a whole new understanding of the sport, and when you step onto the international stage you find yourself amongst major competitors each of them wanting individual success. For a young competitor, this would be a defining moment in their career where no doubts nerves would kick in. Yet, it was here amidst the palpable tension of a major competition, that Oli flourished. With aid from fellow fencers, it would be here that he would learn valuable lessons that would propel him to new heights.
With each bout Oli continued to get better and better, leading to a triumphant victory at a junior event in Bangkok. His success on the global stage was further continued by his contribution to the Great Britain national team, clinching a coveted medal and having his name in the history books forever.
Despite his prospering fencing career, Oli remains grounded in his commitment to academic pursuits. With him training twice every Monday and Thursday with the university, individual sparring sessions every couple of days with coaches, Bucs on Wednesdays and FNC sessions every Tuesday and Friday lead to a huge amount of rigorous training sessions. To have assignments and exams on top of these training sessions is a remarkable achievement by Oli showing his determination not only in sports but in life in general. Embracing a very well-rounded work-life balance gives Oli the recognition that success extends beyond the confines of the fencing strip.
In Oli’s story, we find a narrative of discovery, determination and continued hard work. From humble beginnings to international acclaim, his story will inspire many who are looking for a niche sport to enter. Oli embodies the modern-day athlete, striving for greatness and wanting to leave his mark on the world stage. With an exceptional career already, Oli is destined to be an all-time fencing great, etching his name into Great British Olympic history, one fencing bout at a time.
